Pirates give Griffin nine-year, $140 million extension

Pittsburgh Pirates shortstop Konnor Griffin agreed to a nine-year contract extension worth $140 million, the club announced Wednesday. The deal, the largest in franchise history according to MLB.com, secures the 19-year-old through his age-28 season. Griffin, MLB Pipeline's No. 1 prospect entering the year, made his major league debut on April 3, 2026, against the Baltimore Orioles.

Griffin, who turns 20 on April 24, has hit 3-for-17 with a double, three RBI and two runs scored in his first major league games. He went 2-for-4 Tuesday night against the San Diego Padres. Pirates pitcher Paul Skenes praised the infielder, calling him a "big leaguer through and through" who is "the player that we all know that he is and that he’s going to be."

The extension locks in Griffin before he reaches arbitration eligibility. Griffin said the security allows him to focus on playing: "It feels great knowing I will be a Pittsburgh Pirate for a long time," adding, "It will be nice to have everything behind me, and now I can just go play baseball."
