Hankerson Cut By Seahawks, Court Ruling Opens College Path
The Seattle Seahawks have waived running back Anthony Hankerson, a move that could send the former Oregon State standout back to college football rather than to another NFL roster. Hankerson had signed with Seattle last week and appeared in the team's 19-16 preseason loss at Tennessee on Sunday night, rushing for 10 yards on five carries and adding two receptions for nine yards.
Hankerson is one of 16 players who graduated high school in 2022 and were granted eligibility for a fifth collegiate season following a Louisiana court order issued last week. He is not the only Seahawks player affected by the ruling. Running back T.J. Harden, who appeared in Seattle's preseason game against Dallas, was also covered by the temporary restraining order. Harden, who played last season at SMU after going undrafted, was waived by the Seahawks and entered the transfer portal last week - a similar path to the one Hankerson now appears to be following.
Hankerson went undrafted out of Oregon State this spring and signed with Miami in April before being released earlier this month. In his second season with the Beavers, he rushed for 1,086 yards and nine touchdowns while adding 22 catches for 123 yards, production that made him one of the more productive backs on Oregon State's roster. With his NFL stint now on hold, the transfer portal represents his most likely next step should he clear waivers.
