Rutgers Season-Ticket Holder Vows to Quit Team After UMass Upset
A longtime Rutgers football season-ticket holder said he is done supporting the program after the Scarlet Knights lost 37-21 to UMass on Thursday night. Speaking anonymously on "The Zach Gelb Show," the caller said he plans to cancel his remaining plans to follow the team this season and demanded that head coach Greg Schiano and his entire staff be fired.
The caller, who said he has held Rutgers season tickets for 20 years, described specific plans he intended to scrap, including a trip to Boston College next week and an Airbnb already booked in Madison, Wisconsin, for a Nov. 7 game against Wisconsin. He also said he wanted to watch Rutgers alum Kyle Monangai, now a running back with the Chicago Bears, in person. UMass entered the game off an 0-12 season in 2025 and had never beaten a Big Ten program or a Power Four opponent since moving up to FBS in 2012, according to figures cited in the broadcast. Rutgers was favored by 29.5 points. The caller said UMass piled up close to 400 total yards, including 200 rushing, and called the Scarlet Knights' defensive performance "the most deplorable, despicable, horrible adjustments" he had seen, adding that the unit had gone from being among the worst in college football a year ago to performing even worse on Thursday.
Schiano, in his second stint leading the program since returning in 2020, has posted a 31-42 record over that span after guiding Rutgers to an 11-2 season during his original tenure in 2006. Zinn recently said the football program's NIL spending falls between $20 million and $30 million and that the department believes it is "headed in the right direction" financially. Thursday's result is likely to intensify scrutiny of that investment and of Schiano's job security as the season continues.
